The single-day death toll from Covid-19 surpassed the100 mark for the first time in Bangladesh on Friday with a significant rise in the virus infection rate.

The Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) reported 101 deaths during the last 24 hours until 8:00 am on the day.

The number of deaths from coronavirus jumped by nearly 40 per cent to 598 in the country in the last week ending on Friday over the previous week's 429, according to the official data.

With the latest daily toll, the total number of deaths from Covid-19 reached 10,182 in Bangladesh since the virus was first detected in Bangladesh in March last year.

The daily death tally due to the coronavirus disease has been on an upward trend in recent days, forcing the government to impose a countrywide weeklong 'hard' lockdown since April 14, followed by a set of weeklong restrictions to check the spread of the virus.

After showing a downward trend in the past few days, the virus test positivity rate shot up to 23.36 per cent on Friday against 21 per cent just a day back.

The DGHS reported a total of 4,417 new Covid-19 cases across the country during the last 24-hour reporting time, up from 4,192 on the previous day, said a DGHS press release.

According to the DGHS data, a total of 18,906 samples were tested while some 18,707 samples were collected during the last 24 hours.

On the other hand, a total of 5,694 people recovered from the Covid-19 during the mentioned period, the press release said.

The rate of recovery was reported at 84.70 per cent on Friday.

The rate of fatalities from Covid-19 remained almost static at 1.43 per cent in the country on the day.

According to the official data, the total number of Covid-19 cases reached 711,779 in Bangladesh and out of them, 602,908 recovered from the deadly disease.

Over 5.13 million samples have so far been tested in the country since March last, according to DGHS.
