July 07, 2019 00:00:00

The child, who was strangled in an empty flat in Old Dhaka's Bonogram, was raped before being murdered, police said.

Dr Sohel Mahmud, chief of the forensic department of Dhaka Medical College Hospital, confirmed the rape of this seven-year-old girl on Saturday citing evidence found in the medical test, reports bdnews24.com.

The victim has been identified as Afrin Saima, daughter of businessman Abdus Salam in Nawabpur. She was the youngest among Salam's four children and a nursery student of Silverdale Preparatory & Girls High School at Wari.

"After taking permission from her mother, Saima left her apartment on Friday evening to play with other children of the building as she did every day," said Nurul Amin, additional deputy commissioner of DMP's Wari Division.

"Saima remained missing since then. Family members called police after they found her blood-stained body lying on the floor with a rope around her neck."

The body was found in an empty flat on the ninth floor of a building in Bonogram on Friday night. Saima has been living on the sixth floor of that building with her family, police said.

Several injury marks were found on her face and neck, according to the police. The body was sent to DMCH for an autopsy.

Six people were taken into police custody for questioning in connection with the incident.
