ACC summons eight ex-BCMCL high-ups

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) summoned eight former high officials of the state-run Barapukuria Coal Mining Company Ltd (BCMCL) on Sunday to quiz over the recent coal missing scam.

The former officials are - five managing directors (MD) Sirajul Islam Chowdhury, Mahbubur Rahman, Khurshid Hasan, Kamruzzaman and Md Aminuzzaman along with three general managers (GM) Mir Abdul Matin (mining), Mizanur Rahman (mining) and Md Saiful Islam (surface operation).

They were asked to appear before the ACC officials at its headquarters in the city's Segunbagicha area on Monday and Tuesday, said ACC spokesperson Pranab Kumar Bhattacharjee.

The commission summoned Mir Abdul Matin, Md Saiful Islam, Sirajul Islam Chowdhury and Mahbubur Rahman today (Monday) and the rest tomorrow (Tuesday).

On July 27, BCMCL authority sued 19 former and current officials of the company, including its MD over missing of 144,644 tonnes coal from the company's mine yard.

BCMCL manager (admin) Anisur Rahman filed the case with Parbatipur Police Station in Dinajpur according to Section 5(2) of Prevention of Corruption Act 1947 and Section 409 of Penal Code.

According to the case statement, the accused officials were involved in the disappearance of coal worth around Tk 2.30 billion.

The national anti-graft authority, in the meantime, issued a travel ban on 21 people, including the former and current top officials of BCMCL.

A three-member ACC probe committee, consisting of its deputy director Shamsul Alam, assistant director A S M Sajjad Hossain and deputy assistant director A S M Tajul Islam, has been investigating the coal disappearance issue.
