ASK worried over wholesale arrest

FE Report | November 09, 2018 00:00:00

Ain O Salish Kendra (ASK) on Thursday expressed deep concerns over the "mass arrest" of opposition leaders and activists from political programmes.

Referring to media reports, it said law-enforcement agencies are arresting opposition party workers for preventing lawmen from discharging their duties, planning subversion and blasting [Molotov] cocktails.

On November 07, the ASK in a statement said Dhaka Metropolitan Police and Dhaka district police produced 431 people in a lower court.

The court put 310 on remand for further investigation, it mentioned.

The ASK believes such acts would create a bad impression of the lawmen regarding people's rights to freedom of expression and democratic practices.

"The ASK is condemning and expressing grave concerns over 'mass arrest. To establish the rule of law, we urge the authorities concerned to refrain from such acts," it said.
