Bangladesh has achieved the world's highest percentage improvement in overall Travel and Tourism Competitiveness Index (TTCI) score that has helped the country to move up five positions to be ranked 120th globally. In 2017, the country's ranking was 125th.

The World Economic Forum (WEF) issued the latest report on TTCI on Wednesday. It prepares the ranking in each two years.

This year the number of countries, adjudged for the ranking, was 140. Spain retained its top position in the ranking, followed by France.

Among the South Asian countries, Bangladesh is only ahead of Pakistan, which has been ranked 121st. Among the neighbouring states, India has been ranked 34th, Sri Lanka 77th, and Nepal 102nd, the WEF report said.

It mentioned that Bangladesh improved in safety and security (from 123rd in 2017 to 105th in 2019), ICT readiness (116th to 111st), T&T prioritisation (127th to 121st), price competitiveness (89th to 85th), and ground and port infrastructure (74th to 60th) with scores at double-digit rates.

Bangladesh's environmental sustainability also increased in the ranking (from 128th to 116th). But much of the country's growth was caused by improvement in the indicators measuring marine sustainability, the TTCI report added.
