FE Report | March 13, 2019 00:00:00

Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has identified the bodies of five more victims of the Chawkbazar fire through DNA test.

The fire victims are identified as Ismail Hossain, 60, Zafar Ahmed, 43, Foysal Sarowar, 53, Mostafa Mia, 39, and RehnumaTabassum Dola, 19.

Additional Inspector General of CID Sheikh Himayat Hossain disclosed the identities of the fire victims at a press briefing held at its conference room in city's Malibagh area.

Earlier, 24 family members of the victims provided DNA samples to CID to claim the bodies which were burnt beyond recognition in the devastating fire, Mr Hossain mentioned.

The identities of two more fire victims could not be known yet as DNA samples collected by CID didn't match with the bodies, he said, adding that these two bodies would be kept in the morgue until claimants' DNA samples matched.

Earlier on March 06, CID identified 11 people out of 19 whose bodies were burnt beyond recognition in the fire in Old Dhaka on February 20.

These bodies were among at least 71 people killed in the fire incident that also left 41 injured as the blaze raged through a chemical warehouse before engulfing several other nearby buildings.

The authorities concerned have so far handed over 51 bodies to their families.

The bodies identified on Tuesday were taken to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital morgue and would be handed over to their families apart from those identified on March 06, the morgue in-charge told the FE.

The bodies identified were set to be handed over to their families shortly after completing necessary procedures, DMCH police camp in-charge Bachchu Mia told the FE.

After the fire incident, nine victims with severe burn injuries were admitted to DMCH. A total of four fire victims died at the DMCH burn unit while three others got released after treatment there.

A day after the incident, CID started collecting DNA samples from relatives through DMCH for cross-matching to ascertain the identities of unidentified fire victims.
