One dies in Ctg shipbreaking yard blast

CHATTOGRAM, May 15: A worker was killed and five others were injured in an explosion at a shipbreaking yard at Barwalia area under Sitakunda upazila on Wednesday.

The deceased was identified as Mohammed Rubel, 27, a cutter man of the shipbreaking yard of the Premium Trade Corporation.

According to sources, the explosion took place when the six workers were dismantling a scrap ship at around 9:00am. They received severe burn injuries when gas from a room in the vessel triggered a blast and a fire during the cutting of the ship.

They were immediately rushed to the Chattogram Medical College Hospital (CMCH), but Rubel died on the way. Five others have been undergoing treatment at the Burn Unit of the CMCH.

The injured workers are Mohammed Masud, 19, Mohammed Al Amin, 27, Mohammed Shohel, 24, Md Mamunul Islam, 28 and Md A Kamrul, 28.

When contacted, Abdullah Al Harun, duty officer at the Fire Brigade at Kumira in Sitakunda, confirmed the incident.

Jahirul Islam of CMCH police outpost said local people brought the six workers to the emergency department of the hospital at around 10:00am but doctors declared one of them dead. A case was filed.
