Over 100 Yaba traders including 10 relatives of Bodi surrender to police in Cox's Bazar

COX'S BAZAR, Feb 16 (UNB): Over 100 Yaba traders, including 10 relatives of former MP Abdur Rahman Bodi, who have been kept at a police safe house, formally surrendered to police on Saturday.

The surrender programme began on the Pilot High School ground in Teknaf at 11.00am in the presence of Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan as the chief guest while Inspector General of Police Dr Javed Patwary as a special guest.

A total of 102 Yaba traders surrendered to police and deposited 0.35 million Yaba tablets and 30 firearms.

Around 44 people were killed in gunfights with law enforcers or rivals in the district since the crackdown against drugs began on May 15 last. Of them, 40 were killed in Teknaf alone.

The traffickers, including 35 people who are named as 'godfathers' on the government's anti-narcotics list, also surrendered.

"Tougher action will be taken against those who are still operating," the IGP warned, urging the active traffickers to surrender.

The police chief also warned law enforcers who are involved in drug trafficking.

"All forms of legal support will be provided to those who turn themselves in to police custody. We will try to complete their cases within a short time," he said, hoping to inspire the surrendered traffickers.
