Sit-in by non-MPO teachers continues

FE Report | March 24, 2019 00:00:00

The teachers and employees under the non-monthly pay order (MPO) scheme continued staging their sit-in for the fourth consecutive day on Saturday.

Several hundred teachers carrying placards were observing the sit-in programme in front of the National Press Club in the city to press home their demand for MPO enlistment.

Non-MPO teachers and employees reiterated their demand with emotion-chocked voice, saying that they hardly get any salary to maintain their family.

The agitating teachers said they would not return home until they get assurance from the prime minister about MPO enlistment.

Under the banner of Non-MPO Educational Institutions Teachers and  Employees' Federation, they have been staging demonstrations in front of the National Press Club since March 20.

On Friday, a team from the agitating group met the education secretary who assured them of conveying their demand to the prime minister.

At the protest venue, agitators blocking the road continued chanting slogans in support of their demand as they did not get any positive response despite having assurance from the government side in several times.

They vowed to continue their protests until the government gives them assurance about MPO enlistment.

Echoing the same, Federation's President Principal Golam Mahmudunnabi Dollar said their demand for MPO enlistment has long been ignored even after getting assurance from the government last year.

Teachers and employees from over five thousand non-MPO institutions across the country have come to the capital city to press home their demand.

In the meantime, some teachers fell sick during the protests. Earlier, the police foiled a move of the agitators to meet the prime minister on Thursday.

In July last year, the teachers called off their demo upon assurance from the government that it would consider their demand. But claiming that no progress in this regard has been made, non-MPO teachers and employees again took the streets.
