TIB voices deep concern

'Enrolling students in DU sans test'

The Transparency International, Bangladesh (TIB) expressed grave concern over the allegation of enrolling some students in the Dhaka University (DU) without taking any admission test.

The anti-corruption watchdog also urged the authorities concerned to form a probe-body to conduct a neutral and credible investigation regarding the matter, and to ensure punishment to the people involved in the irregularity.

The TIB, in a media statement on Wednesday, observed that the allegation of irregularity can weaken people's confidence on the admission process of the university.

Some people were given the opportunity to get admitted to the DU, bypassing (rules and regulations of) the university's admission process, and some of them eventually won in the DU Central Students' Union (DUCSU) polls, according to news reports.

The TIB Executive Director Dr Iftekharuzzaman said in the statement, "If the allegation is correct, it can be considered as an act of farce with general students. If it happens so, it is an alarming sign against the expectation of establishing a merit-based society."

It is compulsory to ensure proper educational standards for a university like the DU apart from maintaining equal rights for all students in the admission process, he added.
