Bangladesh foreign ministry summoned on Sunday United Nations (UN) Resident Coordinator Mia Seppo in connection with the UN statement on killing of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) student Abrar Fahad.
The foreign office sought explanation from Ms Seppo about the rationale of the UN statement, a senior official said.
The UN is not found to issue such statement for similar incidents in other countries and also the government has taken prompt steps to bring the perpetrators to the book, the foreign office told Ms Seppo.
The UN official arrived foreign office at 11 am, and met the director general of the UN wing. She left after half an hour, and declined to make any comment on the issue.
Earlier, in a statement on Wednesday, the UN deplored the killing of a young BUET student, allegedly for freely expressing his views.
"Campus violence in Bangladesh has over the years affected and claimed too many lives, with apparent impunity for those bearing responsibility," the intergovernmental organisation said.
"The UN Bangladesh notes steps taken by the authorities to apprehend alleged perpetrators. It encourages independent investigations that should lead to justice being served in a fair process, and measures to ensure prevention of further incidents," said the UN statement.
"Freedom of speech is a human right, and nobody should be harassed, tortured or killed for exercising it," the UN said.
Later, while addressing a programme on Wednesday, Mia Seppo -- the United Nations Resident Coordinator (UNRC) -- termed the BUET incident a 'horrific nightmare' and felt that parents want safe and secured environment on a campus where their children go for studies.
"We are very shocked and saddened by the incidents that took place in BUET. We called upon the authorities to investigate and bring the perpetrators to justice. A statement has already been issued from UN in this regard," Mia Seppo said on Wednesday.
