‘Use modern tech to tap potential of jute sector’

Adoption of modern technologies for introducing value added diversified products is a must for tapping the potential of the country's jute sector, discussants said at a seminar on Monday.

They also called for conducting proper research into innovative jute goods.

The speakers made the observations at the seminar on 'Diversification of Jute Products: Prospects and Impediments' organised by Dhaka Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DCCI) in the city.

Dr Hossain Zillur Rahman, executive director of Power and Participation Research Centre (PPRC), said after garments and remittances, jute is a potential sector that could be a new economic driver.

He also stressed the need for action plans for overhauling jute mills, global market analysis, pulp and paper and value addition of products to boost incomes from this sector.

Mr Zillur, also the adviser to the former caretaker government, thinks that entrepreneurs may urge the government to allocate funds for technology upgradation and innovations for value-added diversified jute products.

DCCI president Osama Taseer who presented a keynote paper at the seminar said it is imperative to use diversified jute products.

At present, producers are making 235 types of jute goods in the country. Considering its demand abroad, the number of innovative products needs to be raised, he added.

The DCCI president suggested outlining a long-term roadmap to explore the potential of local and international markets. He also emphasised the importance of enacting a law on jute pulp and paper.

Rashedul Karim Munna, managing director of Creation Private Limited and director of DCCI, presented a power point on the local and global scenario of jute goods.

He said the demand for jute products is increasing day by day globally. Referring to the international jute study group, he said requirement for jute bags is about 500 billion pieces in the world.

Plastic bags will be banned in the whole Europe by 2020 where 45 billion pieces of shopping bags are used, he added.

Textiles and Jute Minister Golam Dastagir Gazi said research work is very necessary for value-added products. So, they will take initiative to this end, he added.
