The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) on Sunday nabbed a businessman for his involvement in misappropriating Tk 44.89 million through delivering substandard medical equipment to Rangpur Medical College and Hospital (RpMCH).

An ACC team led by its Assistant Director Md Saiduzzaman detained Syed Kamrul Ahsan, general manager of Bengal Scientific and Surgical Company from the capital's Topkhana Road at around 4:00 pm, said ACC public relations official Pranab Kumar Bhattacharjee.

Earlier on September 12, ACC filed a case in this regard with its Rangpur office accusing six persons including RpMCH Principal Dr Md Nur Islam, RpMCH Assistant Professor Dr Md Sarowat Hossain, Bengal Scientific and Surgical co-proprietor Zaher Uddin Sarker, his son Md Ahsan Habib, his father Abdus Sattar Sarker, and Universal Trade Corporation proprietor Asadur Rahman.

However, Ahsan Habib's name was not there in the case statement earlier.

According to the case statement, the accused individuals, in collusion with each other, took decision about the equipment worth Tk 44,889,300 without prior approval of the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).

RpMCH principal arbitrarily issued tender notice without any demand specification and awarded the work order to Bengal Scientific and Surgical Company.

The supplier then delivered unusable and substandard medical equipment defying tender specification despite no necessity of such equipment.
