Bangladesh Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the United Nations (UN) Masud Bin Momen said the government of Bangladesh has engaged in reviewing and updating old domestic laws to protect the rights of people, particularly the vulnerable groups, reports BSS.
"Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has restored the core values of our Constitution and reinforced respect for human rights…under her visionary leadership, Bangladesh is now marching towards achieving a prosperous and inclusive society; which is free from poverty, hunger, inequalities, fear and discrimination," he said.
The ambassador was speaking recently at the third committee meeting of the 73rd session of the UN General Assembly in New York, marking the 70th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR, according to a message received on Saturday.
He said Bangladesh always stands by the oppressed people while it has given shelter to Rohingya people on humanitarian ground. "Despite resource constraint, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has extended her support to the Rohingya people," he added.
About women empowerment, Momen said Bangladesh is known internationally for its success in women's political, economic and social empowerment thereby promoting their human rights.
