Bijoy Mela kicks off in port city

CHATTOGRAM, Dec 10: Week-long Bijoy Mela (Victory Fair) began at the Chittagong MA Aziz Stadium in the city on Monday.

Jesmin Alam, wife of Shaheed Muridul Alam, inaugurated the event by torching the Victory Flame at the main entrance to the stadium in presence of hundreds of freedom fighters and local elites.

Mayor of Chittagong City Corporation AJM Nasir Uddin was the chief guest at the inaugural session of the Biloy Mela where national and local leaders of different political parties, freedom fighters and eminent citizens will recall the events of 1971 and cultural activists will perform every afternoon.

The event has been being held in Chattogram for the past three decades.

The inaugural function was presided over by chairman of the Bijoy Mela Parishad and acting president of the Chattogram city Awami League Mahtab Uddin Chowdhury while it was also addressed by some freedom fighters.
