COX'S BAZAR, July 20: Bangladesh Coast Guard (BCG) members in a special drive on Thursday seized 63 pieces of large size current nets used illegally for fishing from Boalkhali upazila.

According to BCG sources, on a tip-off, a team of BCG conducted a raid in Unique Standard Brickfield at Char Khijirpur village of Paschim Gumdandi union under Boalkhali upazila at night.

After a long search, Coast Guard members recovered 63 high quality contraband current nets from inside the brickfield.

Later, the force seized all the illegal nets.

Fishermen catch jatka (hilsa fry less than 10 inches in length) and other small size fishes from the sea and river by using this type of illegal net.

Estimated market value of the seized nets would be around Tk 5 million (Tk 50 lakh), sources said.

Assistant Director of BCG Lt Commander Abdullah Al Maruf confirmed the matter.
