DNCC dismantles 550 illegal structures

Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) in a number of drives in the city on Sunday removed some 550 illegal structures from footpaths and roadsides.

Two separate teams of the corporation, led by its four executive magistrates, conducted the drives in the city's Uttara and Mirpur-14 areas, jailed one person and realised Tk 210,000 in fine for illegally occupying the footpaths and roads.

A trader named Kamrul Islam was jailed for 15 days for doing business occupying footpath, in default to pay fine of Tk 100,000.

In Mirpur's Bhasentek area, executive magistrates ASM Shofiul Azam and Mohammad Sajid Anowar jointly launched drives and removed some 350 makeshift structures, including shops.

In Uttara's Jasim Uddin Avenue and Robindra Sarani areas, executive magistrates Mohammad Abdul Hamid Miah and Md Zulkar Nayen in a joint drive evicted 250 illegal structures and fined seven businesses Tk 160,000.

Around 30,000 square foot area was freed from illegal occupation and opened for movement of the public during the drives.

Such drives will continue in the coming days, said DNCC sources.
