The Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) launched the 'Clean Dhaka' drive at Uttara on Sunday, aiming to remove illegal structures from footpaths and roads.

On the first day, the DNCC knocked down more than 300 illegal structures on Garib-e-Newaz Sarak, Rabindra Sarani and the Road 35 behind the Mascot plaza.

Four executive magistrates of DNCC -- Aminul Islam, Sajid Anwar, Abdul Hamid Miah and Julkar Nain -- led the mobile court drive which began at 11:00am.

The mobile court team demolished makeshift shops, sheds and stairs occupying the roads and footpaths. The magistrates also fined two organisations -- Hungry Duck and Khazana -- Tk 0.3 million.

The magistrates also sent two people to jail during the drive. A person was sentenced to one-month imprisonment for creating obstacle to government activities while another received seven-day jail term for doing business occupying a footpath.

During the drive, DNCC Mayor Atiqul Islam said many people have set up political offices and commercial structures by illegally occupying footpaths.

Although the city corporation has constructed high quality roads and footpaths, people cannot use them due to illegal occupation, he added.

He also said that there are hawkers on the footpaths and stairs of shopping malls encroaching on footpaths. DNCC will not allow anyone doing business causing people to suffer.

"There will be a review meeting tomorrow. We will conduct the drive again the next day," said the mayor.
