Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) has launched a 'combing operation' on Tuesday to prevent breeding of Aedes mosquitoes, which are responsible for dengue fever.

The campaign titled 'Ward-wise Aedes mosquito breeding source destruction and cleanliness campaign' was inaugurated on Tuesday at Gulshan's Shahid Dr Fazle Rabbi Park.

Educationist professor Abdullah Abu Sayeed attended the launching programme as the chief guest while the DNCC Mayor Atiqul Islam presided over the occasion, a statement said.

Under the campaign the DNCC teams will divide the wards in blocks and sub-blocks, also it will involve the locals to help facilitate the campaign.

Speaking on the occasion, Abdullah Abu Sayeed said Aedes mosquitoes' breeding source need to be demolished in a bid to prevent spread of dengue fever.

"City dwellers must regularly clean inside their residence and neighbourhood to destroy the breeding grounds of mosquitoes," he said.

Atiqul Islam said there is a need for locals' participation in the campaign to make it successful.

The DNCC has been involving city dwellers in the campaign, the mayor said.

"We shall go house to house and warn the dwellers about the Aedes mosquito breeding," he said, adding that the DNCC staff would attach stickers showing the message "Be aware! An Aedes mosquito larva has been found in this building".
