Gunfights' with law enforcers kill four in two districts

14 die in such incidents in eight days

Four people were killed in separate 'gunfights' with law enforcers in Jeshore and Mymensingh districts early Saturday, report age4ncies.

With the latest figures, a total of 14 people were killed in 'gunfights' across the country since May 12.

In Jashore, three suspected drug traders --Abul Kalam (48), son of Kader Ali Morol, Habibur Rahman (38), son of Abdul Barik Sheikh and MilonKashari (40), son of Sattar Kashari of Noapara village -- were killed in a reported gunfight on Paira-Noapara road in Abhaynagar upazila.

A team of RAB set up a check post on the road around 9:00 pm on Friday, said company commander Zahid of Rab-6.

He said the RAB team signaled a motorcycle as three 'drug traders' were passing by the checkpost riding bike around 2:00 am. Ignoring the signal, Zahid said, they tried to speed away.

When the elite force tried to catch them, the bikers opened fire on them. In retaliation, the law enforcers fired back, triggering the gunfight.

After the gunfight, they found the trio injured with bullets, Zahid added.

Later, the injured were taken to Abhaynagar Upazila Health Complex where doctors declared them dead around 7:00 am.

The RAB team recovered two pistols, one magazine with five bullets, 400 bottles of Phensidyl and a Chinese axe from the spot.

Goni Miah, officer-in-charge (OC) of Abhaynagar thana, said two RAB members were also injured in the gunfight.

In Mymensingh, a murder accused was killed in a reported gunfight with detectives at Chowrasta in Nandailupazila early Saturday.

The deceased was identified as Emon, son of Nurul Islam, and a resident of Kolapara village of the upazila. He was accused in several murder cases.

Ashikur Rahman, OC of Detective Branch of Police in the district, said police arrested Emon in connection with killing of auto-rickshaw driver Rana after snatching his vehicle on May 17.

A DB team conducted a drive around 2:30am along with Emon for arresting other criminals, said the OC.

Emon's associates opened fire on police. In retaliation, the law enforcers fired back triggering the gunfight. Emon sustained bullet on his chest during the gunfight.

Later, he was rushed to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital where doctors declared him dead, he said.

Earlier, two people were killed in 'gunfights' in Chattogram and another in Chapainawabganj on May 18, one in Rajshahi on May 17, one each in Fatullah and Feni on May 16, one each in Narayanganj and Kushtia on May 15, two others in Mymensigh on May 14 and May 12.
