JS body seeks names of those involved in Biman ticket scam

FE Report | September 30, 2019 00:00:00

The Parliamentary Standing Committee on the Civil Aviation and Tourism Ministry on Sunday asked the ministry to submit the names of the officials involved in booking fake Biman tickets and the names of the agencies concerned.

The committee at its 7th meeting at the parliament building also resented charging of Tk4,000 for using a wheel chair by a sick passenger provided by Biman.

Committee chairman ABM Obaidul Muktadir Chowdhury who chaired the meeting later informed these to the media.

Mr Chowdhury said it upset the JS body that Biman Bangladesh Airlines charges a sick person Tk4,000 ($45) simply for using a wheel chair.

Expressing surprise, he said no other airlines have such rule to charge fee for a wheel chair, adding, "It must be changed."

Citing his experience, Mr Chowdhury said recently he went to Singapore for treatment and after arrival he used a wheel chair for which he had to pay Biman Tk4,000.

Other members of the committee at the meeting also echoed his resentment.

When contacted, Civil Aviation and Tourism Secretary Mohibul Haque told the FE that the chairman resented overcharging for use of a wheelchair.

The ministry will review the rule of Biman and inform it to the committee, he said.

Whether the system of charging the fee for wheelchair use will exist or not, Mr Chowdhury said he was unaware of the matter, he added.

"The ministry will scrutinise the rules in details and take a decision later," he said.

Besides, it was found in the working paper that Bangladesh Parjatan Corporation (BPC) has chalked out a plan to celebrate 100th birth anniversary of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman in 2020 at a cost of over Tk 190 million.
