COX'S BAZAR, July 20: The lawmen have revealed the identities of two 'drug peddlers' who were killed in a 'gunfight' on the marine drive in Cox's Bazar district.

The deceased were identified as Enamul Haq (33), son of Fazlu Mia, and Farhad Hossain (32), son of Billal Hossain.

Both of them hailed from Bodura village of Kachua sub-district under Chandpur district.

Maj Mehedi Hasan, company commander of Cox's Bazar RAB camp, on Friday said the gunfight occurred at Himchhari on Cox's Bazar-Teknaf marine drive at 4:00am on Thursday.

Border Guard Bangladesh and Rapid Action Battalion jointly set up a checkpoint there to search vehicles, he told the media.

Sources said Enamul and Farhad were heading for Cox's Bazar by a private car.

When RAB and BGB men signalled them to stop and went to search the car, the drug peddlers opened fire.

The law-enforcers had to retaliate against the firing, thus triggering the gunfight, he added.

After the incident, the joint force found two bullet-hit victims inside the car.

They were rushed to the Cox's Bazar Sadar Hospital, but the on-duty doctors declared them dead.

The lawmen also claimed to have recovered 60,000 pieces of Yaba tablets, one foreign-made pistol, one home-made gun and some bullets from the vehicle.
