Malaysian deputy minister visits Rohingya camp in Cox’s Bazar

Assures refugees of continued support

A Malaysian delegation led by Senator Liew Chin Tong, deputy minister of Defence in Malaysia, visited the camp of Rohingya people and Field Hospital established by Malaysia on Thursday last in Cox's Bazar, reports BSS.

The delegation interacted with residents of the camp, local administration and different NGOs during their visit.

The community leaders, on behalf of residents of the camp, expressed to the minister their urge to return to their own land, it added.

They also requested the Malaysian deputy minister to extend support from the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) to settle the issue.

The minister assured continued support from Malaysia to fulfil the needs of Rohingya people who were forcibly displaced from Myanmar.

He expressed his gratitude to all concerned with a special mention of Bangladesh Army for supporting the smooth functioning of the Malaysian Field Hospital.

The minister sincerely acclaimed the role of government and the people of Bangladesh for providing humanitarian supports to these persecuted people due to timely decision of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

Earlier, the delegation arrived in Bangladesh on May 14 last on an invitation of Security Adviser to the Prime Minister of Bangladesh Major General Tariq Ahmed Siddique (Retd).

The visit is being conducted by Bangladesh Army with overall supervision of Armed Forces Division.

An Iftar mahfil was also hosted in honour of the delegation on the same day.

The delegation visited National Defence College in city's Mirpur Cantonment area and UNHCR office in Dhaka on May 15 and exchanged their views.
