Nigerian President lauds BD's generocity towards Rohingyas

Bangladesh HC presents credentials

Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari has listened to the success stories of Bangladesh with deep interest and highly appreciated the generosity of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in hosting 1.1 million forcefully displaced Rohingyas from Myanmar, reports UNB.

The President and Commander-in-Chief of the Federal Republic of Nigeria stressed, in particular, on cooperation in the field of agriculture between the two countries.

The issues came up for discussion when Bangladesh High Commissioner to Nigeria Md Shameem Ahsan presented credentials to President Buhari at the State House, Abuja on Thursday.

A guard of honour by a military contingent preceded the presentation ceremony, said the High Commission on Saturday.

The presentation ceremony was followed by a meeting between the High Commissioner and the President.

The Nigerian President felt encouraged to learn that Bangladesh, despite its small geographic size and with a population of 160 million people, is already self-sufficient in food production.

High Commissioner Ahsan thanked the Nigerian Government for its constructive role on Rohingya issue especially at the UN.

During the meeting, both sides noted that there are huge potentials to expand bilateral relations between the two friendly countries and underlined exchange of high level visits.

The High Commissioner mentioned about the visit of the Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to Nigeria in 2010 at D-8 Summit.

High Commissioner Ahsan drew the attention of the President about opening a resident Nigerian Mission in Dhaka which remains under its consideration.

The High Commissioner invited the Nigerian President on behalf of the President and Prime Minister of Bangladesh, which he gladly accepted.

The President warmly welcomed and congratulated the new High Commissioner of Bangladesh and assured all-out support during his tour of duty.

Ahsan conveyed the greetings and best wishes of the President and Prime Minister of Bangladesh.

During the meeting, High Commissioner Ahsan briefed the Nigerian President about the tremendous successes achieved at home and abroad under the dynamic leadership of the Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

The Foreign Minister of Nigeria Jeoffrey Onyeama and Pandora Chowdhury, wife of the High Commissioner were also present during the meeting.

A career diplomat, Ahsan served as the Consul General of Bangladesh in New York before his first ambassadorial assignment in Nigeria.
