COX'S BAZAR, June 19 (Agencies): A Rohingya leader was hacked to death in front of the distribution centre at Balukhali camp by so-called "opponent group" on Monday night.

Deceased Md Arifullah (36), passed BA honours from the University of Yangon.

He was very skilled in English language. He used to describe the misery of Rohingyas to different ministers, presidents and foreign officials who came to visit them in the camps, said Ukhia Upazila Nirbahi Officer Md Nikaruzzaman.

Md Abul Khayar, officer-in-charge of Ukhia Police Station, said on information, a police team recovered the wounded body around 8:30 pm.

There were many deep wounds in different parts of the body.

Earlier on October 19, an opponent group of Rohingyas had attacked Arifullah.

Though he escaped that time, his younger brother Muhibullah sustained knife injuries.

The mystery behind the killing is being investigated, the OC added.

Earlyer news adds: At least 10 people have been wounded in clashes between two rival groups of Rohingyas inside a refugee camp at Teknaf Upazila in Cox's Bazar.

The fight started around 11pm on Monday at the Nayapara refugee camp in Nhilla Union, said Ranjit Kumar Barua, chief of the Teknaf Police Station.

The names and identities of the wounded could not be known immediately.

Currently, more than 1.1 million Rohingya refugees live in Bangladesh.

Of them, about 700,000 have fled Myanmar's Rakhine State to Bangladesh to escape a crackdown launched the Myanmar army last year following an insurgent attack on security forces.

Ranjit said two rival groups clashed with sharp weapons, injuring 10 people. The victims have deep injury marks on their heads and bodies, he said.
