Rights groups at a human chain programme in the city on Friday placed a 17-point demand to ensure safe roads and public transport.

A total of 26 rights groups took part at the event titled 'Stop unabated death on roads: Ensure safe public transport', demanding that the public transport system of the country be made safe for the commuters.

Bangladesh Poribesh Andolon (BAPA) Vice President Syed Abul Maksud, Bangladesh College-University Teachers Association President Prof Nur Muhammad Talukdar and Bangladesh Jatri Kalyan Samity Secretary General Mozammel Hoque Chowdhury spoke, among others.

BAPA joint secretary Mihir Biswas presided over the human chain while BAPA general secretary read out a statement containing the 17-point demand.

Syed Abul Maksud alleged that Bangladesh's transport management is the worst in the world.

The most underdeveloped countries in the globe have better transport system than Bangladesh, he added.
