June 13, 2018 00:00:00

The sit-in programme carried by non-government teachers entered third day on Tuesday in the city demanding their inclusion in the Monthly Pay Order (MPO), reports UNB.

A group of teachers under the banner of Non-MPO Educational Institutions' Teachers and Employees Federation gathered in front of the National Press Club in the city around 10:00 am.

Their demonstration called earlier on Monday was foiled by police.

The teachers staged the demonstration as Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid did not take any initiative to fulfil their demand, said Principal Golum Mahmudunnabi Dollar, president of the federation.

Even, Finance Minister AMA Muhith in the proposed budget for the next fiscal did not make any specific declaration about their enlistment for the financial support, he added.

During the demonstration, the teachers also rejected the education minister's assurance.

Education minister in his assurance said the non-government teachers will be gradually enlisted for the subvention even if there is no allocation in the budget.

Asim Kumar Baral, an agitated teacher, said the education minister assured them several times and it is the 27th time they came to Dhaka to raise their demand.

"We thought that the finance minister would allocate some budget for us but it is so frustrating that he did not even mention about the issue in the proposed budget," he added.

Federation general secretary Principal Dr Binay Bhushan Ray along with other was also present during the sit-in programme.

The teachers, who called off their last round of movement following Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's assurance, have started their latest movement on Sunday amid police intervention.
