Thrust on proper training for female migrant workers

FE Report | September 23, 2019 12:00:00

Speakers at a meeting on Sunday stressed the need for proper training, skills development and job diversification for female migrant workers looking to go abroad.

They also called for enhancing capacity of the stakeholders to negotiate with the migrant-receiving countries to ensure rights and safety of female migrant workers abroad.

They also suggested checking illegal migration, raising awareness among migrants, as well as ensuring better coordination among the stakeholders in order to protect the rights of the migrants.

The recommendations were made at a view-exchange meeting on 'Female migrant workers' rights and ways to ensure safety' organised by the Bangladesh Mahila Parishad at its office in the city.

Rownaq Jahan, expatriates' welfare and overseas employment secretary, attended the function as the chief guest, with Mahila Parishad President Ayesha Khanam in the chair.

Additional director general of the Bureau of Manpower Employment and Training (BMET) Sheikh Rafiqul Islam, BMET director Md Nurul Islam, and Founding Chairperson of Refugee and Migratory Movements Research Unit (RMMRU) Tasneem Siddiqui spoke as special guests.

Rownaq Jahan said the government has been implementing various programmes to ensure rights and safety of female migrant workers abroad.

"The government has taken initiatives to check the menace of middlemen, so that migrant workers can get required support and training from the agencies concerned," she said.

She said nearly 5,000 migrant workers went to Brunei with the support from the BMET, whereas 10,000 more individuals got to the Southeast Asian country without following due process.

Ms Jahan underscored the need for sending competent female workers who are capable of adapting themselves to the new environment among foreigners.
