Transport workers enforce indefinite strike in eight northern dists

Transport workers went on an indefinite strike in eights districts of Rangpur division on Thursday morning, demanding justice for their fellow who was beaten dead allegedly by Detective Branch (DB) police in Chattogram on April 22, reports UNB.

Abdul Jabbar, general secretary of Thakurgaon District Motor Workers Union, said the strike was enforced following the decision of Rangpur Divisional Workers Union protesting the killing of bus driver Jamaluddin, a resident of Dash Mile in Dinajpur district.

Movement of all modes of motorised vehicles including long-route buses have been suspended following the strike, causing immense sufferings to the commuters.

The workers also halted plying of auto-rickshaws and microbuses after taking position at different points in the district.

In Chattogram, a 24-hour transport strike enforced by Bangladesh Road Transport Workers Federation protesting the killing of a bus driver allegedly by Detective Branch (DB) police ended on Thursday.

The strike that began at 6:00 pm on Wednesday disrupted road communications between the district and the rest of the country, causing sufferings to commuters.

Earlier, a regional committee of Bangladesh Road Transport Workers Federation announced the strike in two phases -- one from 6:00 pm Wednesday to 6:00 pm on Thursday on 68 district routes connecting Chattogram and 19 local routes and the second phase on April 28.

The protesters demanded immediate arrest of the killers and bringing them under trial.

Jalal Uddin (50), a driver of Shyamoli Paribahan, was beaten to death allegedly by DB police members on April 22 at Shantirhat area of Patiya upazila of Chattogram district.
