The UN refugee agency has briefed the Bangladesh government about the recently concluded deal with Myanmar to create conditions for safe and dignified return of Rohingya refugees, reports bdnews24.com.
UNHCR Regional Representative and Regional Director for South Asia James Lynch met State Minister for Foreign Affairs Md Shahriar Alam at his parliament office on Tuesday and briefed him about the MoU.
The UNHCR and UNDP earlier on May 31 agreed in Nay Pyi Taw with Myanmar on the text for the tripartite MoU. It will establish a framework for cooperation aimed at creating the conditions conducive to the voluntary, safe, dignified and sustainable repatriation of Rohingya refugees from Cox's Bazar.
The United States has welcomed the deal.
Since August last year, some 700,000 Rohingya Muslim refugees have fled Rakhine state in Buddhist-majority Myanmar to Bangladesh.
They were fleeing violence and persecution, including a military campaign by Myanmar forces, which began in response to violent attacks by Rohingya insurgents.
Bangladesh and UN bodies earlier agreed to work together for their repatriation.
State Minister Shahriar advised UNHCR to continue its engagement with the government of Myanmar towards creating a conducive environment in the Rakhine State for the safe and sustainable return.
Bangladesh has already engaged the UNHCR in the repatriation process by signing two MoUs on cooperation.
