Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader Saturday said three vigilance teams are working to ensure smooth journey for the home-bound people during the Eid-ul-Fitr vacation, reports BSS

"There would be no traffic tailback on the roads and highways during the Eid . . . Three vigilance teams and some other monitoring committees are working to ensure a smooth journey on the Eid occasion," the minister told journalists after a view-exchange meeting with the police, transport owners and leaders at Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) office in the city.

Quader urged all concerned to take special care so that no unfit vehicles become the root cause of traffic congestion on the street. "Plying vehicles without fitness is similar to encouraging killing the people on the street.

Besides, battery-run vehicles are one of the key causes of street accident," the minister observed.

The roads transport minister asked the drivers not to drive their vehicles on the wrong side.

Blaming people's mindset for the frequent road crashes, he said, "If we want to remove traffic jam on the street, we all have to change our mindset first."

Replying to a query, the minister said the vigilance and monitoring teams will oversee the situation of the bus stands or vehicles to check taking excessive fare from passengers or carrying extra passengers beyond capacity.

BRTA Chairman Mohammad Mashiur Rahman and Secretary General of Bangladesh Transport Association Khandker Enayet Ullah, among others, were present.
