Villagers’ clash leaves two dead in Sylhet

SYLHET, Mar 24 (UNB): Two youths were shot dead and 10 others were injured in a clash between residents of two villages over a disputed land at Shahutikar village in Goainghat upazila of the district on Saturday morning.

The dead are Ali Ahmed (25), son of Abdul Jalil of Mitrimahal village in the upazila and Romel Ahmed (30), son of Azizul Islam of the same village.

Witnesses said Jamal Ahmed and his supporters of Bahar village and people of Abdus Sobhan of adjacent Mitrimahal

village locked into an altercation over the construction of a mosque wall on Friday afternoon.

In the early hours of Saturday, a fierce clash ensued between the supporters of Jamal and Sobhan, leaving 12 people, including Ali and Romel with bullet, injured.

The injured were taken to Osmani Medical College and Hospital where doctors declared Ali and Romel dead.

Police recovered some local weapons from the spot and detained some villagers, said officer-in-charge of Goainghat thana Deloar Hossain.
