Women are losing their rights to agriculture and land day by day though the country has achieved remarkable economic development, speakers told a roundtable discussion.
Women have ever remained subservient to men economically and culturally due to the traditional and religious bondages in the patriarchal society, they observed.
The speakers called for formulating a new law and making reform in the country's land system to protect women from the grip of the stereotyped and traditional society.
The roundtable styled "Role of Women in Development: Land Rights, Recognition in Agriculture and Measures" was held at the CIRDAP Auditorium in the capital on Saturday.
Khushi Kabir, chairperson of ALRD and also coordinator of Nijera Kori, chaired the discussion organised by Association for Land Reform and Development (ALRD).
Rownak Jahan Moni, deputy executive director of ALRD, presented a report on the current status of the women in the country.
Banchita Chakma, member of National Human Rights Commission, journalist Abu Sayeed Khan and Shamsul Huda, executive director of ALRD, among others, spoke at the event.
The speakers also called for collective efforts from all stakeholders to ensure the land rights and other fundamental rights of women.
Banchita Chakma said women of the indigenous communities are contributing a lot to the country's agricultural sector but they are not getting rights to the land and assets properly.
Abu Sayeed Khan noted that women are contributing a lot to the country's economy but they are being deprived of their rights.
All opportunities are being taken up by men, he said.
An effective law needs to be formulated to ensure the rights of women in society, he added.
Shamsul Huda said the equal share of assets is the part of human rights.
To ensure women's rights to land and agriculture, all odds and obstacles must be removed, he added.
