Surya Sen was a revolutionary leader and he led the 1930 Chattogram armoury raid in Chattogram of the then Bengal in India. He was a school teacher by profession and was popularly called as Master Da. His father Ramaniranjan Sen was also a teacher. He was born on March 22, 1894 at Noapara, under Raozan Upazila in Chattogram.

His political life started somewhere around 1916 when he was a student of Baharampur College (West Bengal) preparing for his graduation. The police raided the college hostel and few of his fellow resident students were searched. The revolutionary students attracted his keen attention and gradually he was drawn into radical politics, the aim of which was to liberate the motherland by all possible means.

In 1918, he was selected as president of Indian National Congress, Chattogram branch. In 1916 when he was a BA student in Berhampore College he learned about Indian freedom movement from one of his teachers. He was attracted by revolutionary ideals and joined a revolutionary organisation Anushilan Samity.

He was arrested in 1933 and was brutally tortured and eventually tried by a Special Tribunal. On January 12, 1934 he was hanged with his lieutenant Tarakeswer Dastidar in Chattogram.
