Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader said on Monday it is the jurisdiction of the court to decide on imposing a ban on the politics of the Jamaat-e-Islami which had opposed Bangladesh's 1971 independence and whose several leaders were executed for their crimes against humanity committed during the Liberation War, reports BSS.

"A case is being run in the court over banning Jamaat. So, it is the jurisdiction of the court to decide on banning Jamaat's politics," Quader, also Awami League general secretary, told a press conference after a secretariat meeting of the party at the AL president's Dhanmondi political office.

Asked whether Jamaat can form party with a new name, Quader uttered a proverb "old-wine-in-a-new-bottle" saying if the old ideology exists, new name won't bring any changes.

About BNP's decision to boycott upazila parishad elections, the AL general secretary said BNP-Jamaat and Oikyafront fear to take part in the upcoming UZs election following their miserable defeat in the December 30 parliamentary polls.

Quader said the Election Commission will extend all-out cooperation in holding the UZ election in a participatory and peaceful manner.

Regarding the upcoming Dhaka University Central Students' Union (Ducsu) election, the AL general secretary said a committee was formed under the leadership of the party's joint general secretaries Advocate Jahangir Kabir Nanak and Abdur Rahman, organising secretary AFM Bahauddin Nasim and central working committee member Akhtaruzzaman to monitor the polls and the committee has already taken some steps.

Earlier, a secretariat meeting was held with the general secretary in the chair. Deep sorrows were expressed in the meeting at the death of Bogura district AL president freedom fighter Mamtaz Uddin. Prayers were made seeking eternal peace of the departed soul and deep sympathy was conveyed to the bereaved family members.

AL joint general secretaries Mahbub-ul-Alam Hanif, Advocate Jahangir Kabir Nanak and Abdur Rahman, office secretary Dr Abdus Sobhan Golap, cultural affairs secretary Asim Kumar Ukil, relief and social welfare secretary Sujit Roy Nandi, science and technology affairs secretary Engineer Abdus Sabur, forest and environment affairs secretary Delwar Hossain, among others, were present on the occasion.
