Leaders and activists of BNP will stage demonstrations across the country tomorrow (Thursday) demanding the release of its chairperson Khaleda Zia from jail, reports UNB.

The programme is also meant for mounting pressure on the government to ensure proper treatment of Khaleda.

BNP senior joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi announced the programme at a press briefing at the party's Nayapaltan central office on Tuesday.

He said his party's all district and metropolitan city units will demonstrate.

Rizvi, however, said Gazipur city corporation area will remain out of purview of the demonstration programme.

Earlier on June 14, BNP submitted memorandums to deputy commissioners (DCs) across the country, including Dhaka, demanding its chairperson Khaleda Zia's proper medical treatment and her release from jail.

Rizvi alleged the ministers are making unguarded remarks about Khaleda's treatment only to confuse people and obstruct her from receiving treatment at a specialised hospital.

He renewed his party's demand for allowing the BNP chief to receive treatment at United Hospital in the capital after releasing her from jail.

On February 8, Khaleda was sent to jail after a special court sentenced her to five years' rigorous imprisonment in Zia Orphanage Trust graft case.

Rizvi said BNP will sell nomination forms today (Wednesday) to people willing to contest the upcoming elections to Rajshahi, Sylhet and Barisal city corporation elections with its tickets.

He said party nomination seekers can collect the form at Tk 10,000 each from BNP's central office by 4:00 pm on Wednesday.

After filling it, Rizvi said the aspirants will have to submit the nomination forms to the BNP office along with Tk 25,000 security the following day.

Later, the party nomination board will interview the aspirants to pick the most suitable mayoral candidates for the three city polls.

Rizvi said they will announce the schedule for taking interview of the aspirants later.

The elections to Rajshahi, Sylhet and Barisal city corporations will be held on July 30.

According to the election schedule announced by the Election Commission, the deadline for the submission of nomination papers is June 28, while the dates for scrutinising those are July 1 and 2, and the last date for withdrawal of candidature is July 9.
