Cops nab AL leader over wife’s murder in Chandpur

Police have arrested a local Awami league (AL) leader on charge of killing his wife, another ruling party leader in Chandpur, report agencies.

The deceased, Shaheen Sultana Fancy (55), was the principal of Gollak Ideal Degree College in Faridganj and also a member of the AL's women's wing in Chandpur.

Police recovered Fancy's body around 11:00 pm on Monday from her residence in Shologhar Mosque area, said Wali Ullah Oli, officer-in-charge (OC) of Chandpur Central Model thana.

"We assume she died of severe head injuries. We are yet to identify the perpetrators, but her husband Advocate Zahirul Islam has been detained for interrogation," he said.

Fancy's siblings alleged Zahirul, who married another woman about five years ago, has killed her.

Advocate Zahirul Islam is joint-secretary of Chandpur district unit of AL and former president of District Lawyers Association.

"I was not at home and found the bedroom door open when I returned; Fancy was lying in a pool of blood on the floor. Then people rushed in as I screamed," he told journalists before getting arrested.

Both Zahirul and Fancy hail from Maishadi Union in Chandpur. They got married in 1986. Two of their three daughters live abroad while a third studies in Cumilla Medical College.
