Drive against corruption has earned world applause: Quader

COX'S BAZAR, Sept 22 (BSS): Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader today said the government's ongoing drive against corrupt individuals and wrongdoers got worldwide appreciation but such welcoming move made BNP irrigated.

"The government started a purification drive against corruption and misdeeds, even inside the party. This step of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is being acclaimed both at home and abroad," he said at a view-exchange meeting with district chiefs of both private and government institutions at the deputy commissioners' office here.

On the contrary, Quader said, this purification drive that helped to increase the popularity of the incumbent government in recent time caused annoyance to BNP.

The AL general secretary said, "The government went tough against the corrupt individuals of not only other party but also its own people."

Turning to the government officials, the minister urged them to serve the people neutrally. "You needn't to be an Awami Leaguer or to make anybody happy . . . the prime minister ordered you to work impartially without any fear. It will bring benefits to the Awami League," Quader said.

Observing that BNP leaders from top to bottom should resign, the senior AL leader said, "BNP failed to initiate any agitation even for a single minute in the street to free the party supremo from the jail. It also failed to play necessary role as an opposition party as well."

Deputy Commissioner of Cox's Bazar Md Kamal Hossain presided over the programme.

Deputy Minister for Water Resources and AL Organising Secretary Enamul Hauqe Shamim, MP, Pankaj Debnath, MP, Prime Minister's Special Assistant Barrister Biplob Barua, local lawmaker Shaimum Sarwar Kamal, district AL president Advocate Sirajul Mostafa and Poura Mayor Mujibur Rahman, among others, were present.

Earlier, the minister inaugurated a new office of the Roads and Highways Department here and construction works of eight development projects of the district.
