EC to decide on Gazipur polls after getting HC order certified copy

May 08, 2018 00:00:00

The Election Commission (EC) will decide over filing an appeal against High Court (HC) order staying the Gazipur City Corporation (GCC) election after getting certified copy in this regard, report agencies.

Election Commissioner Kabita Khanam made the comments while replying to a question of a newsman at Nirbachan Bhaban in the city's Agargaon.

She said the EC has stopped all electoral activities following the court order.

The HC on Sunday stayed for six months the polls to Gazipur City Corporation (GCC), issuing a rule on the authorities concerned to explain as to why inclusion of six mouzas (areas) of Savar in GCC shall not be declared illegal.

Shimulia Union Parishad Chairman Azharul Islam Suruj filed the writ as a gazette notification was issued on March 4, including six mouzas -- Dakkhin Borobari, Domna, Shibrampur, Pashchim Panishail, Panishail and Domnag - - of his union in Gazipur City Corporation.

The Gazipur city election was scheduled to be held on May 15 where more than 1.1 million voters were supposed to cast their ballots.

On Sunday, Election Commissioner Mahbub Talukder said he was not aware of the grounds of the stay order.

“Yet I verbally ordered the returning officer of Gazipur city polls to suspend all activities,” he added.
