JU students threaten tougher movement if VC doesn't quit

Demo staged at IU for proctor's removal

JAHANGIRNAGAR UNIVERSITY, Sept 22 (UNB): Protesting students of Jahangirnagar University (JU) on Sunday threatened to go on a tougher movement if their Vice-chancellor Dr Farzana Islam does not step down within October 1.

Mohammad Didar, general secretary of JU unit Samajtantrik Chhatra Front, came up with the announcement after observing a one-hour 'black flag' demonstration on the campus.

Terming the VC 'corrupt', the students under the banner of 'Jahangirnagar Against Corruption' gathered in front of the Shaheed Minar of the university around 1pm and showed the 'black flag' to the VC.

They also announced to observe the 'black flag' demonstration on the campus every day during the admission test of the university.

On September 18, the protesters declared its VC 'persona non grata' for her alleged involvement in corruption and irregularities in development projects of the university.

Besides, the former leaders and activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) of Islamic University (IU) unit in Kushtia demonstrated on the campus on the day demanding removal of the university's proctor, Professor M Mahbubar Rahman.

Over one hundred BCL leaders and activists went to the university's main entrance and locked up it at around 1:50pm, witnesses said.

Later, they marched towards the administrative building chanting slogans against the proctor.

The movement of university bus remained suspended triggering suffering to the teachers, employees and students of the university.
