Police detain AL leader over assault on SI in M'singh

An Awami League (AL) leader has been detained on charge of hitting a police sub-inspector (SI) in Gauripur of Mymensingh, reports bdnews24.com.

The arrestee is Rokunuzzaman Pallab, general secretary of the Gauripur union unit of AL.

Police said he hit the SI after he was unable to secure the release of detainees arrested for drug use.

"Police detained three drug users on Friday night," said Delwar Ahmed, officer-in-charge (OC) of Gauripur thana.

"Rokunuzzaman came to secure their release on Saturday morning. He got into an argument with SI Hasanuzzaman after they were not released."

"At one point Rokunuzzaman began to hit him. Hasanuzzaman was later rescued by other police personnel. The SI's buttons and nameplate were torn off his uniform during the scuffle."

First aid was administered to the SI, OC Delwar said.

A case was filed after Rokunuzzaman was detained.
