Awami League General Secretary and Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader urged Jatiya Oikyafront on Tuesday to play a strong and responsible role both in and outside parliament, reports BSS.
"We also want Oikyafront's unity to sustain. A strong and responsible opposition party is essential for the protection of democracy," he said at a joint meeting of Awami League (AL) and its associate bodies at party's Bangabandhu Avenue Central Office here.
Secretaries, presidents and general secretaries of the party's associate bodies, presidents and general secretaries of Dhaka city units, city mayors and AL lawmakers attended the meeting.
Quader said the ruling party does not want to see disunity in Oikyafront. He said the Sheikh Hasina government and the Awami League want a strong and responsible opposition party in the country.
He pointed out that the BNP could not wage any movement during the last 10 years.
The government, he said, did not feel any international pressure for the release of BNP chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia though BNP always lobbies with the international community for the release of its convicted leader.
