'Robber' dies in Cumilla 'gunfight'

A suspected robber was killed in a reported gunfight between his cohorts and police at Chhechrapukuria in Debidwar upazila of Cumilla in the early hours of Saturday, report agencies.

The deceased was identified as Sumon, son of Habibur Rahman of Kuruin village and a 'member of inter-district robber gang'.

Tipped off that a gang of robbers was preparing to commit robberies, a team of police conducted a drive around 1:15 am, said Mizanur Rahman, officer-in-charge (OC) of Debidwar thana.

Sensing presence of the law enforcers, the gang members fired gunshots on the police. In retaliation, law enforcers fire back in self-defence, leaving Sumon dead on the spot, said the OC.

Sumon was wanted in at least 18 cases at Debidwar, Chandina, Daudkandi and several other thanas for robbery and other crimes, he added.
