Former vice-president (VP) of Dhaka University Central Students' Union (DUCSU) and veteran politician Tofail Ahmed urged on Monday the newly elected DUCSU and hall unions' leaders to work together for the general students' welfare despite their political differences, reports BSS.

"You the elected students' leaders are the representatives of every Dhaka University student, not only the leaders for any particular group. So, work for the sake of students in general," Tofail told the DUCSU leaders.

Awami League leader Tofail came up with the remarks while speaking as the chief guest at a training programme for the elected DUCSU and hall unions' leaders at vice-chancellor (VC)'s residence on the campus.

Recalling the memory of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, Tofail said, "Bangabandhu welcomed me from the jail when I was elected as DUCSU VP. Bangabandhu asked me to play a vital role to meet the peoples' demand as the leader of DUCSU, which is considered as the second parliament of Bangladesh."

He urged the students' representatives to work for solving current social problems and meet the students' demands and also maintaining a respectful relationship with the honorable teachers to make a peaceful atmosphere on the campus.

Former DUCSU GS Md Mustak Hossain, now a Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (JSD) leader, said, "We were divided into many students' organisations but it did not make any obstacle to run DUCSU. The present DUCSU representatives were also elected from two panels but I hope that will not be a barrier to the way to running DUCSU activities."

DU Pro-VC (Admin) Prof Muhammad Samad, DU Treasurer Prof Kamal Uddin, DUCSU Treasurer Prof Shibli Rubaiyat-Ul Islam and Chief Returning Officer for DUCSU poll Prof SM Mahfuzur Rahman, among others, were present on the occasion.
