CHATTOGRAM, June 09: Two traffic sergeants of the Chattogram Metropolitan Police were closed on Friday night over assault on two journalists at Agrabad Badamtoli Intersection.

The senior police officials informed the journalist leaders about the decision when they reached the spot after getting information from the victims.

The leaders of Chittagong Journalists Union (CUJ) said traffic sergeant Mashiur Rahman assaulted cameraperson Ahadul Islam Babu of TV channel News24 and his driver for alleged violation of traffic rules at Badamtoli around 6:30 pm on Friday.

As Mashiur and another traffic sergeant Shakhawat tried to snatch the camera from Babu, TV channel's staff reporter Nayan Barua Joy obstructed the sergeants. Later, the sergeants also assaulted Nayan.

On information, former CUJ presidents Reaz Hyder Chowdhury and Mostaq Ahmed, CUJ general secretary Hasan Ferdous, BFUJ joint secretary general Tapan Chakraborty, CUJ leaders Nirupam Dasgupta and Uttam Sengupta went to the spot and complained to senior CMP officials about assault on the journalists.

They instantly withdrew the two sergeants and closed them, said CMP deputy commissioner (Port) Fatiha Yasmeen and ADC (Port) Chhatradhar Tripura.

They said a probe committee has been formed and departmental actions will be taken against them if they are found guilty.
