The Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation (HSBC) on Sunday announced 'HSBC Export Excellence Awards' to recognise businesses in Bangladesh for their outstanding contribution to the national export earnings.

This year, the businesses in four categories will be honoured as the bank's Bangladesh operation declared its 7th installment of the award at a press conference in a city hotel.

The bank's chief executive officer (CEO) Francois de Maricourt, deputy CEO and head of commercial banking Mahbub Ur Rahman and country head of communications Talukdar Noman Anwar spoke on the occasion.

The first category, exporter of the year (readymade garments-RMG), is classified into two groups -- companies with annual export turnover more than $ 100 million in group A and business with annual export turnover below $100 million in group B.

The second and third categories are supply chain and backward linkage: apparel and, traditional and emerging sectors (non-apparel). Companies with annual turnover more than $10 million will be honoured in this category.

The small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in non-apparel businesses having earnings up to $10 million will get the recognition in the fourth category.

The best exporters will be selected based on their performances in business diversification, responsibility, sustainable business practices and governance strengths in addition to their foreign currency earnings.

"Bangladeshi exporters are establishing the country's brand image in the globe through their relentless effort," Mr Francois said, appreciating the diversification and innovation in the local businesses.

"We are pleased that we have been providing a platform for Bangladeshi exporters to showcase their capabilities and global potential through this award."

Citing a reference from a research conducted by the bank, Mr Mahbub said that the country's RMG sector would continue to lead in earning the foreign currency by over 80 per cent till 2030.

"Following this, the agro-based businesses will become an important sector, which is expected to contribute seven per cent of total export earnings," he said.

The nomination form and other details of the award programme would be available at www.business.hsbc.com.bd/eea.

Exporters can also nominate other exporters for any categories till the selection process is open until 5 October 2017.
