35 NRBs get CIP status

A total of 35 expatriate Bangladeshis have been awarded with Commercially Important Person (CIP) status in recognition of their outstanding contribution to the country's economy.

Expatriates' Welfare and Overseas Employment (EWOE) Minister Nurul Islam handed over CIP cards to the non-resident Bangladeshis (NRBs) on Tuesday at the ministry's conference room.

Among the 35 CIP recipients, 29 got such status because of sending significant amounts of remittances through legal channels.

Half a dozen other NRBs received the status for importing Bangladeshi products to the foreign markets.

According to an official gazette notification, Mossammat Jasmin Akter topped the list for sending a large amount of remittances to the country from the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

The other 28 NRBs are Mohammed Mahatabur Rahman, Mohammed Ismail, Mohammed Jashim Uddin, Mohammed Hashim, Nurul Alam, AHM Tajul Islam, Rakhal Kumar Gope, Abul Kalam, Abdul Gami Chowdhury, Mohammed Ali, Morshedul Islam, Mohd Farid Ahmed, Mohd Mosassek Chowdhury, Mohammed Ashrafur Rahman, Mohammed Shamsul Azim, Mohammed Yasin Chowdhury, Hafez Mohammed Idris, Abdul Jalil, Mohammed Abdul Rohim, Mohammed Adnan Imam, Mohammed Mohsin Alam, Abdul Aziz Khan, Shahid Hossain Jahangir, Mahmudur Rahman Khan, and Kazi Sarwar Hasib.

The six other NRBs who got CIP for importing Bangladeshi products to the foreign markets were Mohammed Salim, Nurul Alam, AH Badar Uddin Chowdhury, Khan Md Firozur Alam, Abul Kashem and Mohd Abu Taleb.

State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shahriar Alam was present as the special guest with Secretary of the EWOE ministry, Namita Halder, in the chair.

The CIPs are entitled to enjoy for one year different state privileges from the date of issuance of the status.

They also get priority when they travel in different types of transports, including train, state-owned buses and airlines.

Besides, they also get privileges in public hospitals.
