ADB board meeting begins today

Greater integration of people and economies for facilitating inclusive growth will be, among others, in focus during the 51st meeting of the Asian Development Bank (ADB) Board of Governors that kicks off in Manila today (Thursday).

Over 4,000 participants from across Asia, North America and Europe, including finance and development ministers, central bank governors, private sector and civil society partners, representatives of academia and the media are expected to attend the four-day annual meeting of the Manila-based lending agency, according to the ADB.

The annual meeting is the statutory event for Governors of ADB members to provide guidance on ADB administrative, financial, and operational directions.

It also offers a platform for decision makers to discuss economic, financial, and social policies and programmes, including solutions that help shape the future of Asia and the Pacific.

The overall theme of this year's meeting is "Linking People and Economies for Inclusive Growth."

This year's meeting is expected to discuss the global and regional issues affecting development in Asia and the Pacific and how ADB and its development partners can work together toward an inclusive, resilient, and prosperous region by 2030.

Besides, private sector participation in Asian infrastructure development, technology, globalisation, and job creation, managing and developing Asia's financial markets, women's business startups and women entrepreneurs, community-led climate and disaster resilience and aging and demographic change will also be on the top of the agenda.

Although the official opening session of the 51st annual meeting of the ADB board of governors will take place on May 05, a series of events including seminars, ADB governors' plenary sessions, discussions, media briefings, country presentations have been scheduled for May 3 to 6.

Finance Minister AMA Muhith is set to reach Manila today to attend the ADB's annual meeting, according to a finance ministry press statement.

The finance minister is also expected to take part in the meeting of finance ministers of the SAARC (South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation) countries. He will also have meetings with the ADB President Takehiko Nakaoke and his other counterparts and leaders of different forums of the Asia and Pacific region during the ADB meeting.
