FE Report | October 15, 2019 00:00:00

The organogram of Bangladesh Standards and Testing Institution (BSTI) will be expanded to upazila level for ensuring quality of products, industries minister Nurul Majid Mahmud Humayun said on Monday.

The announcement was made at a discussion meeting on World Standards Day 2019 (October 14) organised by BSTI at its head office in the capital.

Bangladesh is observing the day like elsewhere in the world with the theme 'Video standard creates a global stage.'

The minister said quality industrialisation and good public health depend on BSTI's activities.

The minister said all the officials and employees of the organisation would have to do their duties with honesty to ensure maximum service to the people.

He said for ensuring maximum service, BSTI activities would have to be expanded to upazila level.

Currently the institution's regional organisation includes six regional offices in six administrative divisions-Dhaka, Rajshahi, Barishal, Chattogam, Sylhet and Khulna.

The minister said quality video has been playing a pivotal role in this era of fourth industrial revolution.

"It is time for combination of artificial intelligence, creativity and innovation," he said.

Instagram, Facebook, twitters, youtube and other virtual market places have been playing a significant role in the economic process of the world, he mentioned.

He also said use of video tools in industries, shops, market places and educational institutions have brought revolutionary changes in business and teaching activities.

He added even the law enforcement agencies have been using quality video to detect law offenders.

The minister further added there is no boundary of 'standardisation.'

"If a product is considered standard in Bangladesh, it should also be standard in other countries", he said in explanation.

Salahuddin Ahmed, additional secretary of the Ministry of Industries, said the government is working to upgrade BSTI further.

Bangladesh Standards and Testing Institution Act, 2018 has been enacted incorporating provisions of harsher punishment for wrong doers.
