‘Edn can help make country developed nation by 2041’

The Shahjalal Islami Bank Limited (SJIBL), a leading private commercial bank of Bangladesh, has awarded scholarships worth Tk 41.9 million to the country's 500 brilliant and underprivileged students as part its corporate social responsibility (CRS) programmes.

Governor of Bangladesh Bank Fazle Kabir handed over the scholarship cheques to the students as the chief guest at an award-giving ceremony at the Officers Club in the city on Saturday.

The scholarship recipients are from different colleges, medical colleges and universities.

Among the 500 recipients, 160 were male and 140 female students of secondary school certificate (SSC) level, and 120 male and 80 female students of higher secondary certificate (HSC) level. They got the scholarship for their outstanding results.

Speaking at the programme, Fazle Kabir said the country's existing import-based economy will have to be turned into an export-oriented economy in order to reach the goal of making Bangladesh a developed nation by 2041.

"Education is the one single thing that can help Bangladesh to realise its goal," he said.

He praised Shahjalal Islami Bank in its role to promote education.

SJIBL chairman Akkas Uddin Mollah said contribution of Shahjalal Islami Bank is noteworthy to the economic growth of the country and the bank is doing a lot of social activities as part of its CSR programmes.

Akkas Uddin presided over the ceremony. Chairman of Shahjalal Islami Bank Foundation Engineer Md. Towhidur Rahman and SJIBL Managing Director M. Shahidul Islam were present and also spoke.

Directors Md. Sanaullah Shahid, Abdul Halim, Mohiuddin Ahmed, Mohammed Younus, Fakir Akhtaruzzaman, Additional Managing Director Abdul Aziz, deputy managing directors M. Akhter Hossain, Mian Quamrul Hasan Chowdhury and Imtiaz U. Ahmed were also present at the ceremony, among others.
